Tourism is a crucial driver of economic development in the Pacific region. Yet, development of tourism is challenging due to the large distances between islands, which complicates transportation and logistics. The dependence of supply chains on external imports further exacerbates these challenges, increasing costs and environmental footprints. Sustainable tourism practices are essential to balance economic benefits with the preservation of natural and cultural heritage, ensuring the long-term viability of both the industry and the environment.
The objective of this technical advisory project is to accelerate and scale up the adoption of appropriate, national sustainable tourism policies in the purview of SCP and CE approaches in selected countries in the Pacific. This will be done by facilitating implementation of the Pacific Sustainable Tourism Standards, viewed through the lenses of material production and use.
