The ASEAN Economic Community Blueprint 2025 and the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Blueprint 2025 envision 10 areas, including: the creation of a deeply integrated and highly cohesive ASEAN economy that would support sustained high economic growth and resilience; fostering robust productivity growth through innovation, technology and human resource development and intensified regional research and development designed for commercial application to increase ASEAN’s competitive edge in moving the region up the global value chains into higher technology and knowledge-intensive manufacturing and services industries. This highlights the need to mainstream circular economy principles and promote sustainable consumption and production to ASEAN nations. It also fosters the need to explore how a circular economy can increase collaborative actions and policies to support socio-economic growth and resilience and create more opportunities for wider research and development to boost the ASEAN community to high-technology and knowledge-intensive industries and, at the same time, move towards pollution-free and a sustainable planet. In cooperation with the European Union and UNEP, through the SWITCH-Asia Programme and the Asia Pacific Roundtable for Sustainable Consumption and Production (APRSCP), the ASEAN Secretariat is working on the preparation of the SCP Framework for ASEAN which aims to be a guide for collaboration and coordinated investment in efforts between interested partners in regional and national level activities with a view of strengthening synergies and bringing networks together for greater collective impact in the region, contributing to overall ASEAN community goals, leaving no one behind and the attainment of the SDGS, particularly SDG 12.
